Fuengirola Travel Guide

With its long sandy beaches and impressive views of the Mediterranean Sea, Fuengirola has become a cultural cocktail of Europeans mixed with local Spaniards. What was once a small fishing village, now is a vibrant multicultural town.

Since the 1960’s foreigners started discovering Fuengirola and its area. One of the main attractions is the 7 kilometers of beach that stretches from the Sohail Castle in the west to Torreblanca in the east. The wide promenade and the attractive prices for the real estate are the ingredients of its enormous popularity among the older people.

Along the promenade you can find a very touristic atmosphere with various souvenir shops, tea rooms, tapas bars, restaurants and local beach bars specialised in the fresh fish and seafood.

But it has more to offer than just a promenade and bars. Fuengirola is a town that has all the comforts and facilities you could possibly want. It may not have the chic appeal of Marbella or the glamour of Puerto Banús, but the commercial and cultural sides are just as good.

Places to visit in Fuengirola:

Castillo Sohail: This castle from 956 is the most famous landmark of the area. It was built by the Moors and served to defend the estuary. After its military history, the castle was forgotten for quite a lot of time until 1980’s when it was thoroughly renovated. Today, in addition to five exhibition rooms, it offers a phenomenal view of the sea and the city.
Plaza de la Constitución: the most inviting square in Fuengirola. Thanks to a cozy atmosphere, lots of lights, live music and plenty of great tapas bars and small restaurants in the evening this place turns into a center of life. In the middle of the square there is a main church of Fuengirola. Traditional wedding ceremonies often take place there.
Aquamijas: On the outskirts of the town center you can find a water park equipped with various slides, pools, jacuzzis, etc. It’s a perfect place to spend hot summer days with your family and kids.
Bioparc Fuengirola: A zoo where animals are not being kept in cages. Due to a whole system of ponds, streams, rivers, high walls and nature tunnels, it is possible to accomodate animals completely free in nature. The park is open 365 days a year.
