Benahavís Travel Guide

A few minutes west of Marbella and Puerto Banús and 7km inland there is situated one of Spain’s richest communities – Benahavís. Known locally as the “Rincón de la Gastronomia” – the gastronomic corner of the Costa del Sol with some of the best restaurants in the region.

The municipality extends over a large area of about 150km2. In the heart of this area hidden in the mountains lies the quiet and traditional village of Benahavís, which has retained its Andalusian authenticity.

In this traditional Spanish ‘pueblo’ with its narrow cobbled streets and local small stores and galleries dining is a pure joy for all the foodies. Blissful dining under the stars enjoying both local and international cuisine here is a reality . Benahavís is home to the famous Sabor a Málaga hotel school. One of the most famous dishes from Benahavís is marinated pork fillet or ‘solomillo de cerdo aliñado’ in Spanish – a recipe that is a part of many family traditions!

Spanish Pueblo

The natural environment of Benahavís is a real treasure for lovers of unspoiled nature. It includes numerous picturesque mountain ranges, river valleys and forests, making it one of the most beautiful places on the Costa del Sol. It is perfect for hiking along the mountains and small river canyons. From the highest point of the village on a clear day you can see over 100km of the Costa del Sol and even the African coast.

Benahavís is one of the wealthiest municipalities in Spain and home to one of the best golf course selections on the Costa del Sol with as many as nine golf courses in a close proximity. Golf resorts such as La Quinta and Los Arqueros belong to Benahavís, as does La Zagaleta – an exclusive gated community with some of Spain’s most expensive properties. The nearby Villa Padierna Resort, where the beautiful 5-star GL Hotel Villa Padierna is located, with 3 high-ranked golf courses had the honor of receiving Michelle Obama and her family in 2010.

Los Arqueros

Castillo de Montemayor

Points of interest:

  • Parque Torre Leoneras: on the south side of the village is known for the ruins of a medieval tower and a big lake.
  • Castillo de Montemayor: built in the 10th century, the highest point of Benahavís, is now a ruin, but several parts of the walls and the King’s Tower are still intact. The view from here over the Costa del Sol and Africa is simply magnificent.
  • The Guadalmina River: offers fantastic canyoning opportunities – there are several routes along the river with waterfalls and natural pools – it is one of the most adventurous activities on the Costa del Sol. There is also a beautiful river hike that takes you over a spectacular bridge and along a traditional Moorish irrigation canal.

Agenda:

  • The Sunday market, usually organized on the grounds of an old shrine, situated on the main road to the village, is one of the most popular markets in the region that draws many local farmers with their wide selection of organic fruits and vegetables.
  • Annual Fair in mid-august: for 5 days the village and its inhabitants and guests are enjoying numerous processions, fairground rides, fireworks, local crafts markets and lots of delicious food and drinks.
  • October 7: the pilgrimage in honor of the saint patron of the village – the Virgin of the Rosary.
  • In the summer Benahavís holds concerts and other musical events as a part of its annual cultural program. You can also enjoy the culinary events that regularly take place in the most restaurants in Benahavís.
