Manilva Travel Guide

Manilva includes not only the traditional Andalusian whitewashed village, but also the small fishing village of El Castillo, the quiet harbor of La Duquesa and the hamlet of Sabanillas. It is one of the most traditional Spanish areas on the coast and it is definitely understated. It is approximately 50 minutes driving from Marbella but it’s definitely worth it!

Perhaps because of its simple and unassuming character and the fact that it lies about 3km inwards on the hills above the main road, Manilva is sometimes overlooked by tourists. The village of Manilva is a picturesque white village with the beautiful vineyard that produces their famous Muscatel wine grapes.

A lot has been changed in Manilva over the years, but the area has managed to preserve its unique character and authenticity. The mix of old and new has been successfully implemented into the lifestyle of Manilva. A real estate property here is a popular choice among foreigners thanks to its beautiful beaches and the traditional look of the area.

Every year during the first week of September the inhabitants of Manilva celebrate the harvest (La Vendimia) with a big party that includes the traditional grape trampling and a first tasting of the grape juice. Don’t miss it! In the fall there are many opportunities to buy grapes or raisins in the village.

Golfers will enjoy playing 18-holes at the Duquesa Golf and Country Club with the most spectacular views of the sea and mountains. Besides golf other sports such as cycling and diving are very popular in the area. There are 3 beautiful beaches that are definitely worth visiting: the Chullera beach, which is divided into 2 parts by a rock, the Sabinillas beach, which is surrounded by palm trees and the Arenas beach.

On the west side of the coast there is El Castillo, a place where tradition plays an important role in everyday’s life and people continue to do the same things that they have been going for years. This small fishing village, built around an old castle, still has its fishermen’s huts from the past. If you have time to wander around the area, you will find the best and the most fresh (not to mention the cheapest!) seafood restaurants in the area.

Within walking distance from El Castillo you will find the beautiful harbor of La Duquesa with its international restaurants and boutiques. The harbor has everything for enthusiastic sailors, but also for those who prefer to admire the boats and yachts from the terraces of the many restaurants, bars and cafes scattered around the port.
