Nueva Andalucía Travel Guide
Nueva Andalucía is one of the 5 districts that make up Marbella. With a population of more than 18,000 people it is the third largest district in the city. The area stretches from the harbour of Puerto Banús, inland to the north, over the hills with numerous renowned golf courses to the border with Benahavís. From every street of Nueva Andalucía you have a beautiful view of the imposing mountain La Concha which is partly responsible for the exceptional soft local climate.
Nueva Andalucía was designed and built by the Catalan property developer José Banús, who came to Marbella in 1962 and acquired the vast land here. In 1965 construction work on the Puerto Banús harbour began. In 3 years the harbour – nowadays the crown jewel of the entire area, was finally opened. Nueva Andalucía grew into a beautiful residential area near the chic harbour.
The architect Noldi Schreck, designer of the well-known Beverly Hills in US, collaborated in the development of the residential area that consists of a good mix of very large villas and exclusive urbanizations with luxurious apartments situated in Nueva Andalucía. While driving or walking through the area it is impossible not to notice how beautifully and spaciously everything was designed. Whitewashed villas shimmering under the blue sky, swaying palm trees and the beautiful view of the Sierra de Las Nieves at the background are the setting of an idyllic and luxurious environment.
What is also striking is how quiet Nueva Andalucía is. There is no sign of the nearby bustling Puerto Banús.
The main drivaway to the area was opened in 1964 together with the arena ‘Plaza de Toros’ via the A7 and Avenida Pilar Calvo. This arena which has not been in use since the early 2000s is now being converted into a cultural center of the area. There is a great street market every Saturday situated just in front of it. You can find everything from traditional crafted goods and decorative items to clothing and electrical appliances, fresh local fruits and vegetables. If you are searching for something more modern, check out the Commercial Central Plaza – a big shopping mall with a number of shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, a supermarket and a gym.
From the natural ridge in the western part of Nueva Andalucía opens a beautiful view over the famous ‘Golf Valley’ with its luxury villas nestled between the renowned golf courses of Las Brisas, Los Naranjos and Aloha Golf. Next to the ‘Golf Valley’ there are also such famous golf courses as La Quinta Golf, Los Arqueros Golf, La Dama de Noche and Magna Marbella Golf. A true paradise for golfers!
The area also offers a great nature environment with two water reservoirs. The Turtle Lake or ‘Lago de los Tortugas’, is 4.4 hectares in size and gets its name from the numerous turtles living there. Local children like to swim in the lake in the summer while their parents enjoy a nice picnic. From this lake you can walk all the way to Lake Istán. It is also the starting point for many mountain bike routes and hiking trails.
For families with small children who want to settle in the region, Nueva Andalucía is definitely an interesting option. The renowned international school Aloha College for students aged from 3 to 18 offers a high level of bilingual English / Spanish education. The range of sports facilities such as tennis, basketball, padel tennis and football, yoga and so much more ensure that young people grow up in a healthy and sportive environment.
For entertainment and amusement the residents of Nueva Andalucía don’t have to travel far. A wide range of high-class restaurants and excellent bars manage to attract a discerning public from all of the Costa del Sol. And if all this is not enough, you can always drive to Puerto Banús, where the chic nightclubs, glamorous lounge bars and stylish pubs are open until the early morning hours.
